We repair Volvo FH and FM truck instrument clusters (FH12, FH13, FH16, FM and FMX built from 2001 to 2012) at our workshop in Kuldīga, Latvia. We repair your original cluster, so no programming is needed and the mileage stays as it is. This page is about Volvo trucks, not Volvo cars.
Volvo FH and FM cluster faults we repair
- The air pressure needle drops to zero and the buzzer sounds, often over bumps
- Needles stick or read wrong: speedometer, rev counter, fuel or air pressure
- The backlight is dim or out
- The display is missing lines or half of the screen
- Warning lamps or the warning sound do not work
- The whole cluster is dark
Cluster or something else? Four quick checks
- Run the self-test in the driver’s display menu. If a needle does not sweep, a lamp stays dark or the display shows gaps in the test pattern, the cluster is faulty.
- Speedometer at zero: check the tachograph. If it records no speed either, the speed sensor or the tachograph is at fault, not the cluster.
- Air pressure needle drops: if the brakes work normally and the compressor does not start filling the tanks, the pressure is not really falling. Check the pressure sensor plug; if it is good and the needle drops over bumps, it is the cluster.
- Cluster dark: check the instrument fuses first. A blown fuse makes the cluster dark without any fault inside it.
Volvo FH fault codes that point to the cluster
On these trucks MID 140 is the instrument cluster. These are the codes it stores most often when something is wrong:
| Code | What it means | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| MID 140 PID 117 or 118, FMI 4 | Air pressure signal too low, the needle drops to zero | Pressure sensor and plug, then the cluster |
| MID 140 PID 84, FMI 9 | No road speed on the data link for more than 8 seconds | Tachograph and speed sensor, then the cluster |
| MID 140 SID 250 | J1587/J1708 data link fault | Data link wiring, then the cluster |
| MID 140 PSID 200 to 208 | The cluster cannot hear another unit: engine, VECU, brakes, gearbox or air suspension | That unit and its wiring; several at once point to the data link or the cluster |
Which Volvo trucks use this cluster
| Truck | Years |
|---|---|
| Volvo FH12 | 2001‑2005 |
| Volvo FH16 | 2003‑2006 |
| Volvo FH, including FH13 (13-litre engine) and the 2008 update | 2005‑2012 |
| Volvo FM9, FM12 | 2001‑2005 |
| Volvo FM | 2005‑2012 |
| Volvo FMX | 2010‑2012 |
The Volvo part number is on the label on the back of the cluster. Send it to us with your enquiry. The FH from 2012/2013 and from 2020 has a different cluster: for those, send the part number first and we will tell you whether we can help.

Repair instead of a used cluster
A used Volvo FH cluster costs about €450 to €750 from truck parts dealers, usually in exchange for your old one. It has the same age and wear as yours, and with a different part number it may need programming with Volvo’s software. We repair your own cluster instead: we rework the solder joints, replace the faulty parts and bench-test it before it goes back.
How to send the cluster
- Take a photo of the label with the part number and write down the fault codes
- Switch off the ignition and the main battery switch before unplugging the cluster
- Do not open the cluster yourself
- Pack it in a sturdy box with plenty of padding and send it to the address in the box above
Frequently asked questions
Is the FH13 cluster the same as the FM cluster?
Yes, for trucks built from 2005 to 2012. Parts catalogues list the same cluster for the FH, FM and FMX of those years, so the faults and the repair are the same.
Can I keep driving with a dropping air pressure needle?
Not for long. While the needle and the warning cannot be trusted, you cannot tell a real loss of air pressure from a false alarm. Have the air system checked first, then get the cluster repaired.
Is this the same fault as on Volvo cars?
No. Volvo cars use a different cluster with different faults. For the S60, V70, XC70 and XC90, read Volvo S60, S80, V70, XC70 & XC90: why the instrument cluster fails completely.
5V Digital, an electronics workshop in Kuldīga, Latvia, repairs Volvo FH and FM truck clusters on the original unit: typically €50–€120, usually 2–5 working days, 12-month warranty, sent by post from all over Latvia and the EU.
