If the odometer or trip display in your BMW E39 (5 Series, 1995–2003) is showing faded, patchy or missing digits, you’re looking at one of the most common faults on this generation of BMW instrument cluster: pixel fade in the LCD display.
What pixel fade looks like
The E39’s instrument cluster uses a small LCD segment display for the odometer and trip counter, built into the analogue speedometer face. Over time the connection between the LCD and its driver - a heat-bonded strip called a zebra connector - degrades. The result:
- Odometer digits fade, flicker or disappear partially
- Some digits go missing entirely while others still show
- The display may respond temporarily to tapping the cluster, then fade again
- In advanced cases, the odometer becomes unreadable - which is also an MOT/inspection problem
Why it happens
This is an age-related mechanical fault, not electrical failure in the usual sense - the zebra connector’s conductive strips lose contact with the LCD glass after years of heat cycling. It affects the E39 (and shares the same design with the related E38 7 Series and E46 3 Series clusters), regardless of mileage or how well the car has been looked after.
Repairing it properly
A proper repair replaces the LCD and/or the zebra connector rather than just reseating the old ones, which tends to be a temporary fix at best. Done correctly, the odometer reads clearly and reliably again - important both for day-to-day use and for keeping the car’s mileage record legible.
