If the small multi-information display on top of your Mitsubishi Colt’s dashboard — the one showing the clock, outside temperature and trip-computer readings — has gone blank, dim or unreadable, you’re looking at one of the most commonly reported electronic faults on the Colt. The good news: it’s almost always a repairable circuit-board fault, not a reason to replace the whole unit.
What the fault looks like
The on-board computer fault on the Colt typically shows up as one or more of these symptoms:
- The centre display goes completely blank, or only part of the information is shown
- Segments or pixels are missing, so the clock, date or temperature is hard to read
- The display flickers, cuts out over bumps, or comes and goes as the cabin warms up
- The display stays lit after the ignition is switched off
- The on-board computer resets by itself while driving — as if the battery had just been reconnected
Why it happens
The Colt’s centre display is driven by its own small circuit board, and the fault is almost always mechanical in origin rather than a dead component: the solder joints that connect the display and a couple of key chips to the board crack over years of heat cycling and vibration. As those contacts are lost, the display drops out — first intermittently, then for good. Because it is a solder-joint failure, swapping fuses or disconnecting the battery does not fix it; the board itself has to be opened and re-soldered.
Which models are affected
This affects the Mitsubishi Colt (Z30 generation, roughly 2004–2012) across its variants, including the CZ1, CZ2, CZ3, CZT and the CZC coupé-cabriolet, since they share the same centre display and on-board computer module. A proper repair opens the display module and reflows or replaces the failed solder joints on the board — including the specific chips known to lose contact — rather than just reseating the unit, which is a short-lived fix at best. Done correctly, the display reads clearly and reliably again, keeping your original unit with no coding or programming needed.
