If your Ford’s diagnostic scan shows U1900, U1900-20, U1900-F0, U2510 or P1260, the real cause is very often a failing instrument cluster (speedometer) — not the engine or the key. Here is what each code means and why the cluster is usually to blame.
U1900 – CAN communication bus fault
U1900 means the modules in your car (PCM, ABS, instrument cluster) can no longer talk to each other over the CAN bus. On 2004–2012 Fords, the large majority of U1900 faults are caused by cracked solder joints on the instrument cluster’s circuit board, from years of heating up and cooling down. U1900-20 and U1900-F0 are the same U1900 fault reported with different status / failure-type bytes by FORScan and Ford IDS.
U2510 – invalid data for vehicle security
U2510 (CAN – invalid data for vehicle security) is logged when immobiliser (PATS) data is missing on the bus. It very often appears together with U1900 when the cluster starts to fail.
P1260 – theft detected, vehicle immobilised
On Fords, the PATS anti-theft system communicates through the instrument cluster. When cracked solder joints break that security link, the PCM sees a “theft” condition and immobilises the engine. The classic symptom is that the engine starts and then stalls after 1–2 seconds, with the security light on.
Typical symptoms
Dead or flickering gauges, warning lights, an engine that stalls immediately after starting, and communication errors during diagnostics.
The fix: repair, not replace
In most cases you do not need an expensive new cluster (which also has to be programmed). It is enough to professionally repair the existing unit — re-solder and rebuild the board.
