If the screen in your Renault Clio or Captur instrument cluster has started losing segments, gone blank, or shows lines and a distorted picture — leaving the odometer, speed or trip data unreadable — you’re looking at one of the most commonly reported faults on these models. In most cases it is repairable at the LCD level, without replacing the whole cluster (which would need coding and change your recorded mileage).
What the fault looks like
The cluster-screen fault on the Clio and Captur typically shows up as one or more of these symptoms:
- Missing segments or pixels on the central LCD, so numbers look broken or unreadable
- The odometer (mileage) or digital speed readout becomes partly or fully unreadable
- The display goes completely black, or shows horizontal lines or a distorted image
- A warning lamp or part of the cluster stops lighting up
- The analogue needles and other gauges often keep working while only the screen fails
Why it happens
The Clio and Captur cluster uses a central LCD screen for the odometer, trip computer and, on some versions, the speed readout. Over years of heat cycling and vibration, that LCD and its connection degrade — segments drop out one by one, or the whole display fails. It is a wear fault of the screen module itself, not the sensors or wiring, which is why swapping fuses or disconnecting the battery does not fix it.
Which models are affected
This is most commonly reported on the Renault Clio III (2005–2012), Clio IV (2012–2019) and Captur Mk1 (2013–2019), which share the same generation of cluster and LCD screen.
