If the speedometer faceplate in your Mercedes has started peeling, bubbling or lifting — or the dials have gone dim and patchy at night — you’re looking at a very common age-related fault on the W211 E-Class and its close relatives. The gauges still work; the cluster simply looks tired and lights poorly. Both problems are fully restorable, keeping your original cluster.
What the fault looks like
This fault shows up as one or more of these signs:
- The printed dial faceplate is peeling, lifting or bubbling — often starting at the edges or around the gauges
- The dial face looks faded, discoloured or shabby, even though the gauges still read correctly
- The faceplate has cracked, warped or partly separated from the cluster
- The dials are dim, uneven or dark at night — the electroluminescent backlight has faded
- Night illumination flickers, or has bright and dead patches across the dials
Why it happens
On these Mercedes clusters the dial faceplate — the printed front panel you read the speedometer and gauges through — is bonded over an electroluminescent (EL) foil that lights the dials at night. Over years of heat and UV exposure, the faceplate’s adhesive lets go and the panel delaminates, peels or bubbles; at the same time the EL foil ages and its glow fades. Both are wear faults of age, not a sign that the cluster’s electronics have failed — which is why the car still drives and the gauges still read while the cluster simply looks and lights poorly.
Which models are affected
This affects the Mercedes E-Class W211 saloon and S211 estate, the CLS C219, and the CLK C209 coupé and A209 cabriolet — roughly 2002–2009 — as they share the same instrument-cluster design and dial faceplate.
